Our Mission
To protect the forest ecosystem, provide easier access for Burlington residents, and promote stewardship of the trails for non-motorized recreation.
The Landlocked Forest is not a “parcel.” It is a vibrant forest with many interconnected ecosystems, as well as a system of well-designed natural surface trails that allow people to explore and recreate in a wonderful and historic woodland environment. It is a forest worthy of protection, and a natural and recreation asset that residents of Burlington should enjoy and cherish for generations to come.
Once a parking lot, always a parking lot. Once paved, built upon and developed, there is no turning back. Burlington will have lost its largest unprotected forest forever, and our children and children’s children will have been locked out from being able to experience one of the last large tracts of nature in our town.
Creating Better Access for Burlington Residents
We need to unlock the forest to the residents of Burlington and protect the forest for the enrichment of the town in perpetuity. Rather than spend millions for two major overpasses –and destroy the forest in the process-- we wish to research funding options (local, state, federal and private) for a less invasive and less costly pedestrian bridge to cross the Route 3 and even the Middlesex Turnpike. We also plan to work with neighboring towns to investigate creating a small parking lot abutting the forest that would be easily accessible to Burlington residents. It is in the interests of the towns of Lexington and Bedford to maintain open space for resource and water protections, and we plan to seek their help in accommodating Burlington access. |
